ILHS Mascot Design

2020

ILHS is a choice school in the Northshore School District focused around a project based learning style, community involvement and raising student voices and leadership.

I was part of a team of students given the task to design my school’s logo. The mascot, a raven, won majority vote from students and staff as the school’s animal. The art club, which i was a member of, was assigned the job of creating an official design. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we collaborated only through Zoom meetings and worked on shared Google Slides. When finalizing our design, individual group members were assigned tasks of line work and coloring. I was given the task of cleaning up line work form our rough layout of the raven.

Initial Design

Our initial design was inspired by the Coast Salish Tribe artwork. Since the school stood on Coast Salish land, we wanted to pay respect to the lands origins through our design. We consulted Native American artist and storyteller Roger Fernandes in order to make sure we were using Native American imagery properly. Unfortunately, right after the completion of our design, Washington State created a ban on using Native American styled mascot for schools.

New/Current Design

After being told we had until the end of the school year to create a new design, we went from creating our initial design in five months to creating the new one in only three. The time restraint was stressful, but since we had already gone through the process for the initial design, doing it a second time was a little easier. For this design, I was assigned the role of coloring the raven.

Once the design was finalized, I converted the logo into an .svg format for distribution purposes.
